The combination of technologies like SATA disk drives, grid architectures, de-duplication, removable disk cartridges and asynchronous replication coupled with their faster speeds and higher reliability ratings are simply too much for tape to withstand any longer. Vendors have been very successful in this area, and in addition to achieving impressive de-duplication numbers, they have been ratcheting up performance capabilities with each new generation of products. So it only seems natural to consider applying de-dup technology more broadly.

A licensing agreement currently in the final stages of negotiation may provide consumers with the right to legally make copies of HD DVD and Blu-ray Disc movies they've purchased. Such an arrangement would address a primary concern of DRM critics, who argue that consumers deserve the right to create backups without being accused of piracy.
