SAS, iSCSI and even InfiniBand offer alternative ways to connect servers to storage and are starting to steal some of Fibre Channel's thunder. But while they are, respectively, cheaper and faster than Fibre Channel for direct-attached storage, that doesn't mean the technology is doomed.

An IT specialist at a Department of Veterans Affairs medical center in Birmingham, Ala., failed to properly protect sensitive data on an external hard drive lost in January, according to an investigation of the incident by the VA's inspector general.

The problem that I have with some of the iPhone alarmism is that it leaves an impression that enterprise data is highly secure and that there aren't lots of other potentially much larger holes on which to focus.
